Al-Haram Library in the holy city of Makkah has recently started serving its readers via electronic means. The library consists of 12 sections like the manuscripts, reading, biding, microfilming, people of special needs and the two holy mosques section.
Around fifty employees are working in the library with 15 female employees at the ladies section. Around 160 researchers visit the library everyday.
The Presidency of the Holy Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah is planning to locate suitable premises for the library inside the vicinity of the Makkah holy Haram. The project will be constructed and furnished according to the latest state of the art designs to cope with developments witnessed by Makkah. The plan is to make use of the new communication and information technology in developing the different section of the library.
The Presidency has shifted all original manuscripts at the library to digital forms.
The history of the library of the holy Haram went back to the second century of the Hijra during the era if the Abbasayed ruler Mohammed Al-Mahdi in 160H. It is one of the important and ancient libraries in the Islamic World.
