CITC organizes ITU Regional Standardization Forum

HE Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Ruwais, Governor of Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), inaugurated today the ITU Regional Standardization Forum in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in the presence of HE Sheikh Nasser bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Acting Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and experts from around the world. The forum reviewed innovations in the world of communications and information technology (IoT and AI), cooperation in the standardization of IoT, IoT and future trends, in addition to the regulatory aspects of IoT.

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Al-Ruwais emphasized that the Saudi ICT market is one of the largest ICT markets in the Middle East, where the spending on ICT services reached about $35 billion in 2016 at an estimated growth rate of 8% compared to 2015. He stated that spending on ICT services is expected to amount to $36.8 billion by the end of 2017.

Al-Ruwais pointed out that the Kingdom is one of the top countries in the world in the mobile phone penetration rate, which reached 151% in 2016, adding that the mobile broadband penetration rate amounted to 75%, the international connectivity capacity was 114% for 2016, and the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP was about 6%.
