Minister Al-Swaha: Postal services and logistics are on the verge of a quantum leap

His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, has commended the resolution of the Council of Ministers mandating that the postal services and logistics sector shall be under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.  According to the resolution, the Ministry will be also responsible of formulating the sector’s policies and development plans and proposing draft regulations and amendments.

H.E. Al-Swaha stated that this decision represents an important incentive for accomplishing more achievements and promoting the postal services and logistics sector as an enabler of the Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 that calls for advanced postal services and an attractive environment for investment and innovation appropriate for the development of the sector. He also said that the resolution reflects the support provided for the postal services and logistics sector by the Government of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Al-Swaha pointed out that the transfer of regulatory and control functions from the Saudi Postal Corporation to the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) will push the Saudi Postal Corporation to devote itself to operational activities and develop, improve its experience in preparation for privatization. In addition, it will make the CITC responsible of proposing the relevant regulations, which will help the postal services and logistics sector to grow and develop, taking advantage of the CITC's successful experience in regulating the telecom market in the Kingdom, which in turn will contribute to increasing competition between investors, including local and foreign entrepreneurs and companies, ultimately aiming to improve the service, quality and prices for citizens, as well as to boost e-commerce and digital economy.

He added that the resolution will cause a major shift in the postal services and logistics sector, which will lead to the advancement of the national economy, pointing out that the resolution comes in line with the Vision 2030 that adopted an approach to develop the postal services and logistics sector in accordance with the aspirations of the future in a way that enhances its competitiveness and ensures the provision of advanced and integrated postal services for individuals and government and private sector.

Furthermore, the minister noted that this step is the most important step in the preparations for the privatization of the Saudi Postal Corporation. He pointed out that the postal services and logistics sector, with the support of the wise leadership and the diversification initiatives outlined in the vision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in addition to the global economic changes, Is witnessing significant growth by 2025, exceeding its 10 billion riyals share, in addition to creating more than 50,000 jobs, adding that this step is a strong supporter and catalyst for initiatives to make the Kingdom a global logistics hub.
