Digital alliance in the making between Saudi Arabia and South Korea

Concurrently with the official visit to the Republic of Korea by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, and in order to enhance bilateral cooperation and strengthen economic and development relations between the two countries, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed two memorandums of understanding with the Korean Ministry of Interior and Safety and Ministry of Science and ICT.

This is also part of the projects of the Saudi-Korean Vision 2030, which will contribute to opening wider horizons for bilateral cooperation by creating a qualitative partnership that will contribute to the transfer of successful experiences and the establishment of effective cooperation in the field of communications and information technology and other fields, contributing in turn to make the Kingdom a leading model in all fields of development.

The first memorandum, signed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, represented by the e-Government Program (Yesser) and the Korean Ministry of Interior and Safety, will accelerate the process of digital transformation in the Saudi private sector through developing specialized training and education programs that will contribute directly and rapidly to the desired transformation process. The memorandum will also contribute to exchanging expertise in the field of e-government transactions, technologies, regulations and legislation in the field of communications and information technology. The second memorandum aims to meet the requirements of ICT sector’s development and to cooperate in research and development in several areas, including primarily training human resources in the field of communications and information technology, and modern technologies such as cloud computing, big data, open data, Internet of Things, 5G technologies, high-speed Internet, e-commerce, data protection, cybersecurity and Internet security, software, digital content, digital development, digital transformation and digital applications.

In a statement on this occasion, the Minister Al-Swaha said, “Signing these memorandums is an important step in the ministry's efforts to stimulate investment in digital infrastructure, support the regulatory and legislative environment, provide digital solutions that support digitization/digitalization and information technology required to achieve digital transformation in all sectors, and to rehabilitate the digital capabilities of national cadres to support and accelerate the digital transformation process.” He also noted the importance of the memorandums in the establishment of a technical alliance with South Korea, which effectively contributes to the creation of an attractive technology environment for investment and digital economy development.

Over the last bienniums, MCIT has established cooperation partnerships with various advanced and leading ICT players to enhance integration, cooperation and consolidate efforts to achieve the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030  geared toward building a digital society, digital government, thriving digital economy, and a better future for the Kingdom.
