Governor of Makkah Province HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal has launched today the fifth-generation (5G) network service in Makkah City and the Holy Sites, in the presence of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology H.E. Abdullah Al-Swaha. The launch is part of the 'Smart Hajj' initiative in its second phase, which aims to provide innovative services to pilgrims through different digital platforms and applications.

HRH Prince Khalid expressed his happiness with the launch of this technology, pointing out that such services contribute to facilitating the journey of Hajj pilgrims.

Minister Al-Swaha submitted a detailed report listing the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s preparations and the new programs for this year’s Hajj season. He also reviewed the operational plan for the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, as well as technical preparations.

Al-Swaha noted that the launch of 5G technology in Makkah will deploy 37 stations in the central area and the holy sites, and to achieve the highest degrees of coverage and speed, 4G networks will be available to enrich the digital experience for pilgrims.

He said that the deployment of 5G network comes within the framework of the ICT sector's efforts supported by all the relevant government agencies and private sector's entites.

The launch of the Smart Hajj initiative’s second phase is an extension of the ministry’s innovative efforts made during last year’s season, which included quality services such as a training platform to instruct volunteers who wish to assist pilgrims, a VR platform to help foreign pilgrims perform their rituals, and a smartphone platform to enable pilgrims to download applications.
