Saudi Arabia’s ICT Strategy shapes the future of Innovation and Digital Economy, says Minister Al-Swaha

The Council of Ministers has endorsed a five-year strategy for the communications and information technology  sector. Saudi Arabia’s ICT Strategy 2023 is aimed at accelerating the sector's growth by 50 percent and raising its contribution to the GDP by SR 50 billion.

Extending thinks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the Crown HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Minister of Communications and Information Technology His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha said the new strategy is a result of the unlimited support to the sector from the Kingdom’s leadership in order to serve the country and achieve public welfare.

He noted that the strategy had been set to be a roadmap for the future of the Kingdom in innovation and the digital economy, by developing Saudi digital capabilities and attracting foreign technical investments. He explained that the strategy of the ICT sector would contribute to the improvement of various development activities and increase the effectiveness and performance of the public and private sectors. He also indicated that the aim is for Saudi Arabia to become among leading global countries in the field of information and communications technology.

The ‘ICT Strategy 2019-2023’ features 13 priorities aligned with the goals of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and linked to eight programs to directly achieve the Vision. It supports the technology localization efforts in Saudi Arabia through a 50 percent increase of the workforce localization by the year 2023. It will also attract foreign investment and contribute to empowering women.

The Strategy includes an ambitious action plan to attract leading international companies in the priority areas of emerging technologies, increase the share of local content in the IT sector, improve the technical skills of the relevant local workforce, enhance technical and digital knowledge, drive technical innovation through the promotion of research and development in the Kingdom’s startup ecosystem, enable the development of mega projects, as well as to support coordination and synergy between the relevant ICT entities in the public and private sectors. It is part of MCIT's efforts to establish a robust and cutting-edge digital architecture so that digital transformation accelerates and thus supports the orientations of the Vision 2030, which aims to promote the ICT sector’s role in order to build a digital society, a digital government, a thriving digital economy, and an innovative future for the Kingdom.
