Winners of ‘Dates Hackathon’ announced

Dates Hackathon, organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA), concluded on Saturday. The Hackathon aimed at finding innovative digital solutions to agricultural issues by harnessing technical services, with a view to supporting the digital economy.

150 participants were selected from a total of 1000 applicants to compete for 3 prizes, including SR 30,000 riyals for the first winner, SR 20,000 riyals for the second, and SR 20,000 riyals for the third winner.

The first winning project is ‘Himmat Tuwaiq’ (an application to create a QR Code for each palm tree containing all relevant data and analysis to increase productivity and prediction). The second project is ‘Insect Detection’ (an application to detect insects such as moths, including ​​imaging palm trees by drones and storing images in the Cloud to be used in analyzing and detecting defects). The third winner is ‘Barhi++’ (a device to measure groundwater level through electronic sensors).

Commenting on the occasion, Deputy Minister for Technology and Digital Capacities Development Dr. Ahmed Al-Thenayyan stressed that MCIT focuses on developing partnerships with all parties to create advanced solutions that meet the challenges facing some sectors and limit their escalation. He pointed out that the Dates Hackathons delivered distinct innovative ideas and solutions co-developed by cooperative teams, including creative programmers, 3D design experts and agricultural experts from the Kingdom.

MCIT's sponsored the event as part of its continuous efforts to achieve the strategic orientations emanating from Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aimed at harnessing technology to contribute effectively to the overall development.
