MCIT, GEA ink memorandum to set up e-gaming business accelerator

Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) to set up a business accelerator to support the development of electronic games locally, build human resources working in the field of digital entertainment, and establish a joint digital innovation center.

The MoU was signed by Minister of Communications and Information Technology HE Eng. Abdullah Alswaha and Royal Court Adviser and Chairman of GEA Mr. Turki Al Alsheikh, in the presence of a number of ministers and officials . This came on the sidelines of the entertainment industry forum ‘Joy Forum 2019’ held in Riyadh.

The MoU provides for commitment of both parties to localize the digital entertainment industry and support startups in this field as well as to promote local content, with a view to seize the relevant opportunities, including electronic games that have generated revenues from the Saudi market estimated at SR 2.8 billion in 2018.

Under this MoU, MCIT will train national cadres in a number of areas including designing and programming of e-games, supporting entrepreneurs and accelerating digital startups, providing technical guidance, and developing businesses and financing solutions for eligible projects.

The two parties also agreed to discuss ways of cooperation in the fields of ICT and entertainment, particularly with regard to establishing a joint center for digital innovation aimed at enabling entrepreneurs of emerging technologies in the field of digital entertainment.

The MoU includes cooperation in research and development in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, robots, cloud computing, blockchain, etc., with the aim of developing new digital solutions in the entertainment sector.
