‘Masdar’ program for open-source software launched

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has launched today an integrated program for open-source software entitled 'Masdar', one of the most important strategic initiatives in the strategy of the ICT sector and the National Transformation Program 2020. The program aims to take advantage of open-source software to contribute to the development of technology, promotion of local content and creating a sustainable environment, thus ensuring efficiency of digital transformation, reducing costs and stimulating digital innovation.

Deputy Minister of for Technology and Digital Capacities Development Dr. Ahmed Al-Thenayyan said that the launch of Masdar is aimed at maximizing local content, stimulating digital innovation, supporting open-source solutions, enabling different sectors, local companies, entrepreneurs and individual volunteers to engage the open-source ecosystem and consolidate the concept of giving and sharing, with a view to building an active digital society in Saudi Arabia and supporting the current comprehensive development.

Dr. Al-Thenayyan pointed out that the program involves several initiatives for stimulating the adoption of open-source solutions in the digitization of various sectors (government, industries, SMEs, non-profit sector and specific incentives to encourage firms and entrepreneurs to enter the market, in addition to programs aimed at raising awareness as well as qualifying competent individuals and motivating researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs in this field. He also noted that the program had been developed through goal-oriented cooperation and fruitful partnership with entities in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

An advisory board was formed to accelerate the adoption of open-source solutions in various sectors, avail of and exchange experiences, and develop the programs required to spread awareness and qualify national cadres in this field. The council is chaired by the Deputy Minister for Technology and Digital Capacities Development Dr. Ahmed Al-Thenayyan, with the membership of Eng. Miteb Al-Qeni, Eng. Saleh Al-Mazrou, Dr. Dima Al-Athel, Eng. Mohammed Al-Amoudi, Turki Al-Mana, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Zouman, Eng. Sami Al-Holwah, Eng. Deifallah Al-Otaibi, Dr. Raed Al-Sheikh, Eng. Abdulaziz Al-Oraij and Dr. Mishaal Aqudhi.
