Saudi Arabia and Egypt partner for emerging technologies, innovation

Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) signed today in Riyadh a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in the Arab Republic of Egypt, prior to the activities of the 23rd session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, chaired by the Kingdom. The memorandum is aimed at enhancing the joint cooperation in the ICT field within the endeavors of the two sisterly countries to bolster theirs historical and special relationship and their established vision geared toward developing a diversified and sustainable economy as well as to achieve growth and prosperity for the ICT sector as an enabler of digital transformation in all economic, social and governmental sectors.

The memorandum was signed by Minister of Communications and Information Technology His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha and his Egyptian counterpart  Dr. Amr Talaat, in the presence senior officials and leaders of the two parties and heads of the Arab delegations participating in the Council’s activities.

Minister Al-Swaha that this memorandum is part of the Ministry's efforts to cooperate with many sisterly and friendly countries of relevance in ICT for building a purposeful and fruitful partnerships that contribute to the development of the sector in the Kingdom and achieve the desired digital transformation to keep pace with the current comprehensive advancement and development in the Kingdom under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince- may Allah save them. He indicated that this digital cooperation with Egypt would stimulate the pace of digital innovation in a number of specific areas and investment in national cadres, in addition to transfer and localization of digital knowledge.

The memorandum aims to enhance cooperation in ICTs in a manner that achieves the mutual benefit of the two sisterly countries. Accordingly, the two parties will work on building human capacities through collaboration in building digital capabilities for youth, as a foundation for a partnership between the Saudi Digital Academy and the Information Technology Institute in Egypt. In addition, the memorandum backs innovation and entrepreneurship in both countries through empowering entrepreneurs in emerging technologies, providing the necessary support to maximize economic benefits, activating the role of business accelerators and incubators, and arrange for Saudi-Egyptian initiative for technical innovation and entrepreneurship.

The memorandum also provides for cooperation in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), exchange of experiences and best practices in existing AI applications, and discussing the opportunities of encouraging investment in this field, as well as in awareness and digital transformation in a manner that enables the realization of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aimed at building a digital society and a digital government relying on innovation and efficient digital capabilities.
