Al-Swaha: Over 2 million homes in urban areas to connect to fiber-optic Internet by 2020

His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, has pointed out that efforts to deploy high-speed Internet in cities and urban areas in the Kingdom are proceeding according to the pre-planned schedule, stressing MCIT’s utilization of all its potentials and resources to support the endeavors to accelerate the deployment of fiber-optic technology throughout the Kingdom, and connect more than 2 million homes by 2020, with the view to provide service to as many customers as possible and enable them to benefit from high-speed Internet services.

This came during a field visit during which the Minister was briefed on the work of the fiber-optic broadband project in Al-Yasamin Al-Khaleej quarters in Riyadh City.

Eng. Al-Swaha indicated that the ministry is working on the deploying of fiber-optic networks in urban areas and enhancing the efficiency of networks to develop a strong ICT infrastructure that accelerates the digital transformation and transition to the knowledge-based economy in line with the objectives of the National Transformation Program 2020, in addition to enhancing the role of the ICT sector in building a digital society, digital government and digital economy. He also noted the ministry's keenness to continue the improvement of the quality of services provided to customers, citizens and residents, in all sectors in line with the “customer first” strategy.

Al-Swaha said that the broadband project, launched in August this year, aims to serve homes throughout the Kingdom to provide coverage for more than 2 million homes with high-speed Internet access via fiber-optic, noting that the service has been delivered to more than 58,000 homes, and work is going on to cover the rest of homes.
