The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) announced that it had issued temporary licenses within the 3.6-3.8 GHz band for telecom operators licensed to provide public mobile telecom services in Saudi Arabia to conduct 5G mobile trials.

In this regard, the CITC said that it is seeking to provide all the means required to ensure conducting 5G mobile trials in the Kingdom with ease, adding that the expected launch date for the field trials is at the end of this year.

The CITC stated that 5G telecom services would have a significant impact on enhancing Internet speeds and the use of modern technology in the Kingdom, such as Internet of Things, since this technology is to provide great facilities in smart city services, digital homes, connected vehicles and other applications. It indicated that the 5G technology is characterized by a variety of services, including notably the advanced mobile broadband services.

This year earlier, the CITC formed the national taskforce commissioned with the enablement of 5g technology in the Kingdom under the chairmanship of the Deputy Governor of CITC for Technology and Infrastructure Eng. Majed Al-Miziyed and the membership of 5G systems manufacturers and licensed mobile telecom operators. This taskforce shall work on enabling early adoption of 5G technologies in the Kingdom and developing appropriate mechanisms to facilitate the deployment of its networks according to the international technical standards.
