The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), is sponsoring the "AI for Good Global Summit" in its second edition to kick off in Geneva, Switzerland, on 15-17 May 2018. The Summit is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with XPRIZE Foundation, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and sister United Nations agencies.

The event, taking the theme "Accelerating progress towards the SDGs," is aimed at identifying practical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and supporting strategies to improve the quality and sustainability of life on our planet. It will continue to formulate strategies to ensure trusted, safe and inclusive development of AI technologies and equitable access to their benefits.

The Kingdom is participating with a delegation of leading experts, researchers and entrepreneurs in the field of AI.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Thenayyan, Deputy Minister for Technology Industry and Digital Capacities, emphasized that the Summit is of importance as being the first of its kind to explore the future of AI in the field of sustainable development, indicating that it will contribute to exploring the prospects of employing technological innovations in the pursuit of best services, as well as to open the global horizons in technology fields and put the Kingdom at the top levels of technological development, which is a key enabler for Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. Dr. Ahmed Al-Thenayyan also expressed optimism about the outcome of the summit, noting that it would be a suitable and good opportunity to review the Saudi ICT sector's orientations, as well as a significant strategic platform to be informed about the insights of international experts on how to best utilize AI technologies.

At this Summit, 'Breakthrough teams' will demonstrate the potential of AI to map poverty and predict natural disasters using satellite imagery, how AI could assist the delivery of citizen-centric services in smart cities, and new opportunities to provide access to AI-powered medical breakthroughs through low-tech interfaces. They will also investigate the potential of Blockchain technology to support trusted, transparent AI development. Furthermore, the teams will propose impactful AI strategies able to be enacted in the near term, guided by an expert audience of mentors representing government, industry, academia and civil society. Strategies will be evaluated by the mentors according to their feasibility and scalability, potential to address truly global challenges, degree of supporting advocacy, and applicability to market failures beyond the scope of government, industry, academia and civil society.
