His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawah expressed his heartfelt thanks and sincerest gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense –may Allah save them- for the projects executed by their high directives in the holy cities of Makkah and Madina as well as the Holy Places in order to serve the pilgrims so that they perform their rituals easily and conveniently.

Following an inspection tour on 9 August 2018 in the Holy Places conducted by the Minister to check up the readiness of the ICT sector and the latest preparations of the Saudi Post, the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) and the telecommunication companies to provide the best services to pilgrims, as well as completion of arrangements and guarantees to ensure the continuity and reliability of services – he affirmed the importance of sensing the immense responsibility of the ICT sector represented by the Ministry and its sister entities in addition to the telecommunication companies, and recognizing the great honor to participate in serving pilgrims, as well as presenting a prestigious image of the Kingdom’s efforts, means and resources to facilitate the performance of pilgrimage for millions of Muslims from all over the world. Furthermore, the Minister stressed the need to exert every effort to take up and fulfill this duty.

During his tour accompanied by the Governor of the CITC Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Ruwais, Al-Sawah listened to sufficient explanations of all the steps taken by the entities inspected in preparation for the pilgrimage season and strengthening their network and technical and human preparations to fully serve the crowds of pilgrims flocking to the holy sites. He was also briefed on all technical aspects and operational plans of the season, besides the relevant labor force and technical/technological preparations.

Proceeding from their responsibility for following up and overseeing the postal, telecom and IT services in coordination, the Saudi Post and the CITC have coordinated with the licensed service providers to exert best efforts to provide services of high quality and level worthy of the Kingdom's reputation.

The preparations for this year’s pilgrimage season, which is supervised by the CITC in coordination with the licensed ICT providers, included increasing the number of mobile network towers by 1140 towers compared to 2017, to be 16000 towers in 2018. To improve the performance of the data traffic, the CITC coordinated with telecom operators to provide wireless Internet services via Wi-Fi technology where the number of Wi-Fi access points reached 3000. Besides that, the service providers recruited 2850 workers in 920 points of sale to enable pilgrims to access the services with ease and convenience in order to perform their rituals with no obstacles.

It is worth mentioning that the ICT infrastructure in Makkah Province is one of the most advanced networks in the world, as the size of the available networks and infrastructure is comparable to the total of that available in a number of countries collectively. This infrastructure includes exchanges, cabins, towers and wireless 2G/3G/4G stations to millions of subscribers.
