Aimed at dissemination of digital culture and knowledge among the Arab societies and communities around the world, "Attaa” initiative has been launched on 16 September 2018 by His Excellency Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology. "Attaa” initiative is one of the largest specialized initiatives of its kind in the world, affirming the trailblazing and leading role of the Kingdom in serving the Arab and Muslim nations, as well as the tremendous advancement witnessed in the field of communications and information technology. "Attaa" is an Arabic word which means "giving or volunteering."

This came during a ceremony held by the Ministry, in the presence of Minister of Labor and Social Development His Excellency Eng. Ahmed Al-Rajhi and a number of Their Excellencies, with attendees including media professionals and journalists. During this ceremony, a presentation was made on "Attaa” initiative" outlining its vision, mission and goals to spread digital culture among all the segments of the society, promote technical capabilities of individuals, and to support non-profit organizations in the technical field, aiming to facilitate use of technology in accomplishing daily life tasks.

In a speech, Eng. Al-Swaha expressed his extreme gladness for launching this creative initiative from Saudi Arabia -the heart of the Arab and Islamic world- to enrich Arab technical content through a number of innovative means and tools, and with the participation of a group of experts, specialists and technical amateurs from around the world to keep abreast of the tremendous global technological development, the great technological boom and the remarkable transformation that the Kingdom is witnessing today.

Furthermore, Al-Swaha stressed the importance of this initiative as an incentive to motivate people with digital skills to disseminate knowledge to all members of the society, highlight the distinctive technical examples and role models, and let the society avail of the technology tools to facilitate life, improve performance efficiency and increase productivity. Added to that, the initiative is to help spread the technical giving culture, enhance constructive and purposeful cooperation and to build a database of software technologies.

Al-Swaha also pointed out that the initiative has developed an ambitious plan of action to achieve its objectives through organizing distance and face-to-face courses, seminars and symposia in the field of digital awareness and Arabic technical content enrichment, with a view to deliver the initiative's message to the widest range of beneficiaries, as well as to answer technology-related queries and to stimulate and develop digital volunteering in the non-profit sector to contribute to the development of the Arabic digital content.

Minister Al-Sawah praised the efficiency and ability of the Saudi and Arab ambitious youth to make this initiative succeed, citing the success of the Saudi Arabia in the Hajj Hackathon and other positive events which brought the world's attention, proving that the Kingdom has become an ambitious digital homeland.

The Minister called on all participants to exert more effort and work hard to spread the culture of creative digital volunteering, which will have a great positive impact on serving the Arab societies and communities around the world.

Following His Excellency’s speech, a panel discussion on the initiative was held with the participation of a number of officials, experts and specialists to highlight the desired objectives of the initiative and its action mechanism. Then, the sponsors of the initiative were honored and commemorative photographs were taken.

The initiative is an extension of the Kingdom's efforts emphasizing its pioneering role among the Arab societies in leading digital transformation, being one of the fundamental enablers for the realization of Vision 2030  with the aim to build a digital government, a digital economy based on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and a digital society, altogether geared for creating a vibrant environment, a prosperous economy and a better future for the Kingdom.
