MCIT Hosts Workshop to Explore Opportunities for Launching Domain Names
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in collaboration with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), the Digital Government Authority (DGA), and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), organized a specialized workshop titled “New Generic Top-Level Domains (New gTLDs)”, with the participation of more than 150 experts from government entities and the private sector. The workshop comes as part of national efforts to enhance awareness, build capabilities, and support Domain Names for both organizations and individuals.
Domain names (Domains) are among the fundamental components of the Internet’s infrastructure, used to identify website addresses such as mcit.gov.sa, and they represent a key element in building the digital domains of both organizations and individuals.
The workshop was held in preparation for the upcoming round of the New Generic Top-Level Domains Program (New gTLD Program – Next Round), supervised by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is scheduled to launch in April 2026. The program aims to enable countries and organizations to create customized domain names that reflect their digital identity and contribute to strengthening their global online presence.
The workshop aimed to enable national entities to better understand the technical and regulatory aspects of the program, including the stages of application, evaluation, verification, and transition to operation after approval. It also covered the available support programs for entities that may face resource challenges, while raising awareness of the opportunities and risks associated with the program. These discussions contribute to strengthening Saudi Arabia’s sovereign digital presence and building user trust both locally and globally.
